Amazing Deal – Earn 132,500 American Airline Miles from Home

I love finding bonus offers that work together perfectly.  I will discuss two products offered by Citibank that allow you to earn 132,500 AA Miles or more without leaving your house… or even putting on pants!!  Let’s get started.

Citi and American Airlines have partnered to offer some great bonuses.  Two of their latest offers can be used together if you’re just a little bit creative.

Offer #1: Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard

  • 75,000 AA Mile Bonus
  • Admirals Club Access
  • $100 Global Entry credit
  • Spend $7,500 in 3 months
  • $450 Annual Fee

This is a great offer by itself, but it comes with a double ouch.  Under normal circumstances, it can be difficult to spend $7,500 in 3 months.  Also, the $450 annual fee is not waived, BUT it can be avoided (more on this later).

Offer #2: Citigold Checking Account

  • 50,000 AA Mile Bonus
  • Promo Code: 42ERCWNQU6
  • Spend $1,000 with debit card
  • Make one bill pay transaction for two consecutive months to a non-Citi account
  • $30 monthly fee (waived for first 2 months)

Apply using the promo code above.  I also recommend sending a message to confirm the bonus is attached to your account.  Bonus miles post within 90 days of the statement where you meet the requirements.  Some people have reported success in getting their bonus to post by calling in after meeting the requirements, but YMMV.

The $1,000 spending can easily be accomplished by loading Serve or Redbird.  (I guess you should put on pants for this, although Walmart may not mind)  The bill pay is also easy, especially if you apply for the account in the second half of a month.  Pay a bill in late Month 1 and early Month 2… done before your first statement!  You may end up paying the $30 fee for a couple months if your miles do not post early.  Once the miles have appeared, you can downgrade or close the checking account.

Combining the Offers

This is where the real magic happens!  Remember that $7,500 you have to spend in 3 months??  Well, Citigold checking accounts can be funded with a credit card at opening… and this funding posts as a PURCHASE!! (confirmed for Citi cards, check this post for data points on other cards)  When you open your Citigold account, simply select that you want to fund it with a credit card.  You will need to fill out and fax in a form, and the funds should appear in a few days.

Before funding the account, be sure to call the number on your credit card.  Ask them to lower your cash advance limit to zero, to be sure the funding does not accidentally post as a cash advance.  Also, let them know that you will be making a large purchase in the coming days.  Feel free to fund the Citigold account up to the entire credit limit on your credit card.  You will earn one AA mile per dollar “spent” on the Citi Executive card!  This means you will hit the spending bonus and earn at least 7,500 more AA miles!  If you get a higher credit limit, you can earn even more miles.

Let’s add it all up:  75,000 (Executive card) + 50,000 (Citigold) + 7,500 (Spending) = 132,500 AA miles!!

Oh yeah, what about that pesky $450 annual fee on the Executive card??  If you do not plan to utilize the other benefits of the card, you can avoid the annual fee.  First, make sure you hit the spending bonus before your first statement.  Once the statement posts, the bonus miles will transfer to your AAdvantage account in a couple days.  Confirm that the miles are in your AAdvantage account, then send a secure message to Citi requesting to cancel the card and refund the annual fee (within 30 days of your statement).  You should get a reply confirming both requests!  Some people warn that cancelling so quickly to avoid the fee could sour your relationship with Citi, so proceed at your own risk.

Every now and then, a perfect combo like this appears.  I hope you take advantage of it before these offers disappear!  Cheers!

  1. Just an FYI for those ‘less adventurous’ or who don’t want to potentially tick off citi… You can do this same thing with the Citi AAdvantage Biz card (or personal) and get just 50,000 instead of 75,000… and another 10,000 or so if you’re able to fund it with most of your credit line.
